When I was just a kid and the world was so much bigger
The streets were big and noisy, and I'd walk into the woods
The brook between the trees which led down to river
Would draw us down the way about as far as ever could
One time beside the river I saw words that someone left there
Scratched into a maple was a phrase that made me think
What would make someone walking desperately declare?
"As you walk by the river, don't let her take you under..."
The clues were hard to find and I still don't understand
Was I looking for a monster or trying to solve a monster
There's no legend to retell, just a mystery in scratches
Hackensack I've got to ask what's hiding in your water
So the woods is kinda smaller, but my friends they all still live there
But when some others disappeared, no one could say why
